The Rhythm Kings UK and Beverley Skeete - Gigs & Latest News

"Rhythm Kings UK" can refer to one of several bands, most notably
Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings, a blues-rock group founded by the former Rolling Stones bassist
.

Photo gs (2014)
The Rhythm Kings feat. Beverley Skeete + Otis Redding III - Stay Tuned for New Dates

In 1996 a group of musicians were assembled to form a supergroup. Musicians involved in this project were numerous and included many household names. Players such as Peter Frampton, Graham Broad ,Gary Brooker, Geraint Watkins ,Andy Fairweather-Low, Mike Sanchez, Georgie Fame, Frank Mead ,Martin Taylor, Nick Payn , Albert lee and Chris Stainton. The one female addition was Beverley Skeete. Thus the Rhythm Kings were born.

Over the years the line-up changed and special guests included Dennis Locorriere ( the voice of Dr Hook) Eddie Floyd, Mary Wilson, and Gary U.S Bonds. Even soul legends like Solomon Burke, Ben. E. King, Percy Sledge and Sam Moore were party to the 'Rhythm Kings' Magic.
After many years of touring members went their separate ways .but with the success of Beverley's solo project she managed to convince some of the original key players to join her in reforming a smaller version of the band in order to resume touring again. After a few sold out shows it was evident that there is still a market for excellence such as the Rhythm Kings.

PLEASE HELP TO SPREAD THE WORD AND SHARE THE DATES. THANK YOU ON BEHALF OF TERRY TAYLOR !!

No Gigs curently - watch this space for further announcements:

Here we have one of the greatest voices in rock and still roaring after 50 years on the road. 76 this year, Roger still commands a great stage presence and is always supported by a crack band. Any gig attempting to cover 50 years of writing and recording will fall short in some people’s lists but the 2 hours that he and the band barrel through hits like ‘Burlesque’, ‘In my own time’, ‘Run for cover’, Weaver’s Answer’, Habit of a lifetime’ and ‘Shadow on the wall’ will leave you satisfied and with a grin. Top bloke with a fantastic band. Don’t miss them.

Family:
A progressive rock band from the late 60s and early 70s, their style also incorporated elements of folk, psychedelia, acid, jazz fusion and rock and roll. The band were known for their raw, intense performances. Roger Chapman, John 'Poli' Palmer, Rob Townsend and Jim Cregan reunited in 2013, playing their first shows in 40 years.

Chas Hodges Memorial Concert, Shepherd's Bush Empire - 17 Dec 2018

London, Shepherd's Bush Empire
An evening of music and entertainment in memory of Chas Hodges.

Albert Lee, Dave Peacock, Martin Taylor, Eric Clapton
A show to remember with lots of music greats bidding farewell to Chas Hodges on 17 December 2018. The venue was packed with people who sang along and enjoyed the show to the full. The performers were all outstanding and created an incredible atmosphere. Lucky me, I had a seat upstairs which offered a great view down to the stage - the ground level was full to the limit.
Chas Hodges Tribute, Shepherd's Bush Empire London - 17 Dec 2018
Lots of familiar faces inside and outside the venue and so much fun. It was great to catch up with Claire and Zeena, also nice to see Sue Hargreaves, Jane Craxton and her brother who kindly helped me finding the right queue, Jeremy and Sharon, Dave and Karen and my lovely neighbours on the gallery. Queuing at the door had to follow  a certain order which was somewhat complicated to say the very least, it also took plenty of time but the excellent performance made up for all the effort.

Chas Hodges Tribute, Shepherd's Bush Empire London - 17 Dec 2018
The icing on the cake for me was seeing Albert, Dave & Wayne play alongside Eric Clapton but also great to see other guitar heroes e.g. Martin Taylor MBE and Richard Smith. I don't remember how many encores were given - the crowd cried out for more and the performers were only too happy to add yet another song.  Chas & Dave's warhorse 'Ain't no pleasing you' finally closed the show and everybody joined in.

Chas Hodges Tribute, Shepherd's Bush Empire London - 17 Dec 2018I took so many photos that I almost lost track. What an unforgettable  night !  The list of participants is included in the FlickR photo album, please click on one of the pics to get there.

Some comments by people who attended:

Claire Robinson:
Yes, I was there last night! Couldn’t see anything from the stalls, it was dangerously packed, never known Shep’s Bush Empire as full as it was in all the times i’ve been there. But the atmosphere was brilliant, & everyone singing along to Ain’t No Pleasing You... I think Chas had a good time last night too 😊 Oh, did I mention Eric Clapton was there?

Pauline Brown:
What a dream lineup -  fab night.

Chas and Dave Official:
Thank you to all who came out last night to give Chas such a great send-off.
"Very happy to announce that Chas's tribute show raised over £40,000 for WaterAid. We would again like to thank the fantastic guest artists for donating their time and talent, and of course, you the fans for making the evening a sell-out success and for all your kind additional donations. Chas would have been well-pleased!"

PS Many thanks to Roland Clare for putting up my Gary Brooker photos and comments on the BtP website !

Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings, Het Depot Leuven - 07 Dec 2014

https://flic.kr/s/aHsk6NXLbu
Featuring:
Bill Wyman - bass, vocals
Beverley Skeete - vocals, percussion
Terry Taylor - guitar, vocals
Albert Lee - guitar, keyboards, vocals
Nick Payn - sax, flute, harmonica, percussion, backgr vocals
Frank Mead - sax, harmonica, clarinet, flute, percussion, vocals
Geraint Watkins - keyboards, vocals
Henry Spinetti - drums

Special guest:
Mary Wilson - vocals

Last Rhythm Kings gig of their 2014 Euro Tour took place in Leuven near Brussels. It just so happened that Claire and I were invited by Terry Taylor to come along for the soundcheck and spend the afternoon with the band at the venue. Nice to meet other fellow fans there e.g. Ans who is a fantastic photographer in her own right, Pauline and Sandra with her little baby girl. Sandra & friend took tons of excellent backstage photos which she put up in special FB albums.
Rhythm Kings and their special guest Mary Wilson delivered a brilliant performance as usual, towards the end they said bye-bye to crew boss Dave South who would retire after this tour. As it was Beverley's birthday, Tony brought a birthday cake along (see video on Youtube).

Thanks to Bill, Terry, the other band members and Tony for food,  chats, fun, and not to forget the drinks after the show at the bar. I couldn't think of a better way to finish the tour!

The bands' only German gig on this tour. Not much to say from my part, it goes without saying that they delivered another outstanding performance. I preferred to stand on the gallery rather than being crammed in the crowd downstairs. Nice company up there and a lot of fun. I swapped the latest news with fellow fans and could also take a handful of different photos from bird's eye view. Right after the show, Bill and Mary made their fans happy by signing lots of items from the stage.
Rhythm Kings carried on to Scandinavia next day where they performed a string of gigs. Looking forward to seeing them at their final gig on the continent in December.

Markant Uden - 01 Nov 2014
Great to see the band again after a long time. The venue was quite ok apart from a terrible sound system and glaring spotlights which made taking photos difficult. The band, however, made the most of it and were brilliant as usual. Henry Spinetti did a great job sitting in for Graham Broad who was ill and unable to tour. As Bill told the audience, Henry had to learn all the stuff in two days time, thunmbs up! Beverley, Terry and Mary made their fans happy coming out and sign for them in the interval and after the show. It was nice to see many friends again, also nice to have a few words with crew boss Dave South. The setlist is included in the photo album, just click on the Albert photo to get there.

Parkstad Limburg Theater Heerlen - 02 Nov 2014
Back to Heerlen in South Limburg. Bill and his fabulous Rhythm Kings played a great show at Parkstad Limburg Theaters Heerlen.  Same setlist as last night, just Geraint Watkins surprised us all: instead of telling his funny stories he did an impromptu version of Cilla Black's "Anyone who had a heart" which left Bill and the others speechless ... Nice to meet up with Claire who came all the way from Bristol/UK to see the band play. She could only make it to the 2nd half of the show due to late trains but we had a good time watching the band from the balcony and enjoying a nice drink at the bar. After the show I saw her back to the tour bus where the band offered her a lift back to Amsterdam. Next gig should take place in Eindhoven and we arranged to meet up again.

Muziekgebouw Frits Philips Eindhoven - 03 Nov 2014
Another great gig after a lovely afternoon spent in Eindhoven with Claire having some food before the show started. My 3rd visit to this venue located in the pedestrianised zone of Eindhoven. This time sound and lighting were perfect, no changes to the setlist. Unfortunately the venue wasn't sold out and could have been busier. Great to meet up with friends and music buddies and have some drinks at the bar. During the interval I changed my seat and sat next to Claire some rows back which turned out to be a good idea as there was space to get up and dance.
Fantastic to hear those outstanding Elvis gospels done by the 'Million Dollar quartet' during the break and after the show, they fitted in perfectly. I had a few words with the DJ who turned out to be well-informed.
Later it was time to say bye-bye to Bill, Frank and other band members as well as Claire, as I had a long drive ahead
next day.

Theatre Royal, Plymouth - 30 Nov 2013

Last gig of the tour. Unfortunately, not many photos possible due to tight security, which was a real downer. The RKs were brilliant as usual, Bill's daughter Katie was there, also Martin Barre in the audience (Jethro Tull). Later bye-bye, thank you and hugs to everybody including Broadie & wife - doesn't happen too often as he used to make a quick escape! We got really friendly with Maria Muldaur who talked about maybe coming to Germany, she'll be sending out newsletters. Nick Payn will be touring Germany with Roger Chapman from Wednesday on. Bill takes a well-deserved rest - let's all hope to see this great band again before too long.

Birmingham Symphony Hall - 14 Nov 2013.
Due to Georgie's illness, they had to change the setlist accordingly. Bill said some words about Georgie, still being in hospital but slowly on the mend. Some shots of Geraint Watkins possible this time, who stood up to get a better look at Maria. Due to the security being keen on cameras, I took most of the photos quickly and out of the blue, not too bad though.
Clem Cattini was in the audience. Also great to meet up with UK friends, among them Claire Robinson.

Guild Hall Preston - 15 Nov 2013

Birthday gig for me at Preston. My 2nd visit to the Guild Hall Preston. Same line-up, same set list as in Birmingham. Thumbs up for Bill who suffered from a sore throat but did the entire show as usual. Beverley, Maria and Terry came out later to sign for their fans at the merchandise table which was greatly appreciated.

Llandudno, Venue Cymru - 16 Nov 2013
Nice and relaxing drive up to Llandudno behind the RKs' tour bus. My last gig for a (short) while. Geraint had a home match being Welsh and got frenetic applause. Rhythm Kings were on top form and the audience very responsive. No changes to the setlist. Bill closed the show doing YOU NEVER CAN TELL accompanied by all the other band members, Nick Payn and Frank Mead - the fabulous horn section - provided some funny moves which everybody enjoyed.

Nick Payn - saxophone, flute, harmonica
Frank Mead - saxophone, harmonica, percussion, vocals
Geraint Watkins - keyboards, vocals

Support:
Steve Gibbons

Steve Gibbons opened for Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings. He did some own stuff, some stuff from his Dylan Project and some good old rock'n roll standards by Buddy Holly. I  must admit I wasn't too impressed by his Dylan Project, the rock'n roll songs were ok though. Photos from Steve are included in the Rhythm Kings album, click on the 'Nick Payn' photo below.

Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings returned to Market Harborough Leisure Centre after six years. Great gig and an enthusiastic audience. Some patience was required as the RKs came on rather late, but we were rewarded with a fantastic gig and a good time! Good to see Claire Robinson at the gig although briefly, Tony Panico and crew boss Dave South. Rhythm Kings played as 'minor version' - no Albert, no Andy, no Graham.

Line-up: Bill Wyman, Beverley Skeete, Geraint Watkins, Georgie Fame, Terry Taylor, James Powell (drums), Nick Payn and Frank Mead.

Special guest:
Mary Wilson (of the Supremes) - vocals

My brief review:

The gig at Hotel Krone in Aarberg/Switzerland closed the Rhythm Kings' Autumn Tour 2012. The host Christoph Mueller had some warm welcoming words - an introduction wasn't necessary as RKs became regular guests at this special venue over the years, and then Georgie Fame opened the show with I GOT A WOMAN. Again, a brilliant performance to an enthusiastic audience. Beverley Skeete deserves a special mention having improved her stage presence to the maximum, her velvet voice is something to give you goosebumps.

Mary Wilson again looked different - this time with black (!) curls and a different outfit. The horn section was outstanding, always is, but this time it seemed as if everybody wanted to give more than 100 %. There was a lot of fun and banter going on between the band members onstage.

Finally, when Bill stepped to the centre of the stage to do HONKY TONK WOMEN, no one remained seated but jumped to their feet and danced away. Mary Wilson came on for the encore and they alltogether brought the house down. The band members were presented some gifts by the owner's son, flowers for the ladies and bottles of fruit brandy - sort of, as far as I could take it from the labels.

Good to meet up with our Swiss friend Roland, thanks for sending us the link to a Berne TV station, which gave a brief review  - from 12 min.19 until 15 Min.15 (no longer available on the web).
