Duane Eddy & Albert Lee, Bridgewater Hall Manchester - 30 Oct 2018

Duane Eddy & Albert Lee, Bridgewater Hall Manchester - 30 Oct 2018
Duane Eddy's 80th Birthday tours

Line-up:
Duane Eddy, git
Albert Lee, git
Richard Hawley Band  (backing band)
The Rebelettes, background vocals
Percussion

Support Act:
Robert Vincent Music

Duane Eddy and Albert Lee played on Duane Eddy's 80th Birthday Tour. The Bridgewater Hall Manchester is a beautiful venue which I knewalready from Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings. A spacious foyer with a well-assorted bar area and a food corner which offered little snacks at moderate rates deserve  a mention, also the very friendly staff. Photos were allowed and comfortable seats offered a great view at the stage.
Duane Eddy known for his typical 'Duane Eddy Twang' doesn't perform outside the US too often so this was one rare opportunity to see him - backed by Richard Hawley Band who did a fantastic job.

Duane is one of the original guitar heroes, who put a deep and resounding twang into Rock ‘n’ Roll – the signature sound of a string of late 1950s and early ‘60s instrumental masterpieces. Infused with elements of country, blues, jazz and gospel, his many hits include: Rebel Rouser, Peter Gunn, Because They’re Young, Shazam, (Dance With The) Guitar Man.

Support Band was Robert Vincent Music, worth being checked out. According to Robert they were at the 'Old Grey Whistle Test' on BBC4 this spring (maybe some of my UK friends may know).

I enjoyed a most entertaining evening with happy music and little stories. Old friends Duane and Albert obviously enjoyed jamming and had a lot of fun, also the Everly Brothers got several mentions. The stage set up was a bit strange,  the guitar players queezed in the far left corner and a lot of gear positioned right in front of the players made photos  a bit difficult.

A big thank you to all performers for a great night!

Advert
Some comments:
Duane Eddy: "So happy to be back in England and looking forward to playing my Gretsch Guitars for you all next week at The London Palladium and Manchester. So pleased that my friend Albert Lee will be joining me onstage tomorrow night at The Bridgewater Hall."  (shortened)

Pat Jackson a fellow Everly Brother's Fan and member of the EBI site said:
"It was great to see Duane Eddy and Albert Lee performing in Manchester. He mentioned the Everly Brothers several times. He said they were the finest singers he's ever known. They seemed to be having a laugh together during the show, it was nice to see their lovely smiles. Love the way Albert seems to hide behind everyone and Duane hid beneath his cowboy hat when he was getting praised by the musicians with him."

Jeremy Meek, bass
Steve Gadd, drums

Still blown away by a stunning performance of 'The man with the golden voice' Sheffield-born Paul Carrack and his great band at Passionskirche at trendy Berlin-Kreuzberg district on Monday night.

For those not familiar with the name, he's a singer/songwriter, composer and multi-instrumentalist best known as a band member of Mike and the Mechanics or Squeeze. He's also very much in demand as a session musician, worked with the likes of Eric Clapton and many more - better google him, the list is endless. If you have the chance to see him please do so as this is something you don't get to see every day. On Monday night he tore the house down, the church was rocking !! People wouldn't let him go without some encores, hopefully this may encourage him to come back before too long.

Lots of photos taken, please click on the above picture to get to the album on FlickR. The setlist is included as well.

Admiralspalast Berlin

Gary Brooker, piano, voc
Geoff Whitehorn, lead git
Matt Pegg, bass
Josh Philips, hammond
Geoff Dunn, drums, perc

Procol Harum with the one and only Gary Brooker last night at Admiralspalast Berlin. It was their 2nd visit to this beautiful venue. An excellent performance as expected, huge applause already during the set. 'A Salty Dog' was one of my favourites, also the songs from their latest album NOVUM were well received.

An outstanding version of 'A Whiter Shade of Pale' closed the show to massive applause and standing ovations. Despite my front row position, only a handful of reasonable photos were possible. Unfortunately Gary was not in the mood for photos and signatures after the show, very few had the luck - we were not among them and could only see the back lights of the taxi taking him away. Anyway, the fantastic show made up for everything.

The lovely people of the PH website 'Beyond the Pale' posted the complete Berlin setlist with some comments which I've borrowed and posted below.

Set list with comments, thanks to the 'Beyond the Pale' people:
I Told You So (great soloing fr GW)
Pandora's Box
Simple Sister
You Can't Say That
Sunday Morning (thundrous applause, shouting, whistling)
An Old English Dream (v. well received)
Businessman
A Salty Dog

Bringing Home the Bacon
Image of the Beast (introduced as a jazz number, but after GW's intro Gary says, "I said jazz, not blues.")
Homburg
Shine on Brightly
The Only One (sustained applause)
Neighbour
Grand Hotel (prefaced by brief snatches of Strauss, Liszt, Beethoven, Bach, and with backing vocal: 'the night we dine on fish & chips')
Cerdes (Outside the Gates of) (great applause for GW's solo)
Conquistador

A Whiter Shade of Pale

Kim Wilde & Band, Columbiahalle Berlin-Tempelhof - 13 Oct 2018

Kim Wilde & Band, Columbiahalle Tempelhof - 13 Oct 2018
Columbiahalle Berlin-Tempelhof
Band:

Kim Wilde  (voc)
Ricky Wilde, guitars  (brother)
Scarlett Wilde, backgr voc (niece)
Neil Jones (guitars)
Paul Cooper (bass)
Steve Power (keyboards)Jonathan Atkinson (drums)
Emily Dolan Davies (drums)

Kim Wilde and Band rocked the Columbiahalle Berlin-Tempelhof tonight. What an excellent performer! Three family members in the band, Kim, brother Ricky and niece Scarlett Wilde, Marty can be proud of such a talented family. They did old songs and also some songs from Kim's new album. 'Kids in America' closed the show to huge applause.
The venue is absolutely perfect for these kind of events, bars and facilities on each level and a spacious outdoor area with a food stall. I was lucky to get the very last seat on the gallery which offered a good view on the stage - the stand-up section downstairs was crammed to the limit. Also lucky to have nice neighbours, some of them came from Saxony and even from abroad.

Jerry Kroon (drums)

Support: Jarrod Dickinson and wife Claire

My brief review:

"Bye bye Miss American Pie .... "
Just back from a wonderful evening with American singer-songwriter Don McLean & fabulous Band at completely sold-out Passionskirche Berlin-Kreuzberg. Don was in the mood, said some nice words about the venue and kept the audience entertained with background information and little stories between the songs. They didn't have a setlist just played song after song, some real gems 'And I love you so', Buddy Holly's 'Everyday' and many more until the crowd jumped to their feet and gave standing ovations. A fantastic Monday night and the best way to start the week.

Support was done by talented duo Jarrod Dickinson & wife Claire who did a nice set of partly Country / partly Folk songs. A bit more stage presence couldn't hurt but they made up with nice singing voices and their set was not too long.

Please find a concert review by Hekticket.de  (German only) which nails it down. No further comments needed from my part.
