In addition, he and his band play some of his showcase tunes, including T-Bird to Vegas and the classic Country Boy.

Albert also demonstrates the B-string bender, using it on tunes such as Sweet Little Lisa, and his original Lonely Guy, and pulls out his baritone guitar on a blues jam. A standing ovation... But not for me

That was a standing ovation you heard last Sunday, as "Weekend Wogan" rocked to a close. It was a spontaneous outburst of joyful enthusiasm for the finest display of vituoso musicianship we've heard on the show so far. Which is saying something, in view of the musical talent we've had on display over a few short weeks. The guitar of Albert Lee, combined with the piano of Elio Pace, gave us all the kind of Sunday treat to set everyone up for the rest of the week. I hope that the magic was not lost on our listeners at home, and you enjoyed the songs of Timothy B. Schmidt, so important a part of the marvellous Eagles and a lovely, easygoing guest. He and Albert Lee live close to each other in L.A... They had to come thousands of miles to meet for the first time.... Sheila Hancock too, was all that I could have wished for, charming, intelligent and giving us an insight into the search for Dorothy, that will dominate our televisions for the next few weeks. "Follow that!" as we say every week. We'll be trying... Debbie Reynolds has promised to sing "Tammy"... An Easter Sunday treat you'd be a fool to miss....

No superlative has been created that can describe this week’s Weekend Wogan as Elio, who was joined by Albert Lee for the duration of the show, made radio history.

Perhaps Sir Terry Wogan’s blog sums up the show, but in particular the standing ovation that Elio, the band and Albert received after “Country Boy”. Met up with Jilly and after a lovely meal out we had a good time at Uckfield, Civic Centre. First time for Albert and Hogan's Heroes to play this venue. The gig was fantastic, and we liked the new songs 'The world is waiting for the sunrise', 'Glory Bound', 'Leave the candle', as well as 'Let it be me'. Gavin Povey was given a warm welcome to the band. Well done boys, standing ovations at the end.

The region was flooded in November last year, some of the roads were still closed but after some diversions I got there ok. The Wave Centre Maryport is a lovely venue for various events located at the waterfront. The theatre is small but nice, and I managed to get a seat in row B which enabled an excellent view. Caught up with Sue who had her merchandise table in the foyer next to the lovely little shop offering all kind of goodies made in Cumbria.

Albert told a little story which is worth being mentioned. He said he was happy to be in Maryport again after a long time. He had played in a ballroom in Maryport 50 years ago at the age of 16 when he turned professional backing Dickie Pride who was from Larry Parnes Stables (Larry Parnes, British pop manager and impresario, nicknamed "Mr Parnes, Shillings and Pence").  He also mentioned the low pay he got and that he had to pay his own hotel bills out of that. One guy in the audience said he had seen the gig and Albert asked him to say HELLO after show. The Maryport audience was very responsive which created a great atmosphere. I was glad to hear that the beautiful J.D. Souther song "You're only lonely" was still in the set featuring Albert on acoustic guitar.
There were long queues later at the bands' signing table, everybody wanted to shake hands, got CDs or posters signed or just have a few words with the band members. It was my last gig for a little while but not long now until Uckfield!

The year 2010 sees Hogan's Heroes on the road again with a new guy in the band, Gavin Povey on keyboards and vocals who did a fantastic job and is an excellent addition to the band.
Another gig hosted by our lovely friend Jim Tait was at Marton Hotel and Country Club not too far from Dunston, so I could take my time to get there on a sunny but cold day. As Darlington was on my way I paid a brief visit to Beryl's Guru shop which was fantastic and then carried on to Marton. Jim put me on a table with nice neighbours. Happy to see that Libby could make it in the last minute, and also Mary Evans was there again. Same great show, same support as the night before, and also Jim again as special guest. I noticed that the band re-organised the stage assembly, and Gerry would sit to the left from now on.

All of us bought stripes for the raffle but none of us was among the lucky winners. Libby and I enjoyed chatting, unfortunately she had to leave immediately after the encore but we agreed meeting again in Mickleton in May. For me there was more red wine waiting, and another gig the next day at Maryport in Cumbria.

Good to be back in Dunston (Gateshead). Thanks to the lovely host Jim Tait who got me an excellent seat close to the stage. The support was done by Matt Marriott on acoustic guitar who deserves a mention. Great to catch up with Mary and husband from Newcastle as well as Mo from Berwick. Jim held a humorous little speech starting with the words "Welcome to the Albert Lee & Hogan's Heroes Appreciation Association". I think there wasn't anybody who hadn't seen the band before, all AL&HHs regulars plus the usual suspects .... 'err musicians ... as this band attracts celebrities from all over the world. The Lancastrian suite is technically well equipped with 2 huge screens to either side of the stage, which enables a good view from wherever you sit.

Albert and the boys were in great shape, there were some changes to the setlist, a handful of new songs added. They dropped the "Tiger Rag" and played a new instrumental instead ("The world is waiting for the sunrise") with one verse sung by Gavin. Peter and Albert had a new song together, "Leave the candle" which won me over immediately. Gavin did a great song which was written by him ("Glory Bound"), and got raving applause as he has a fine singing voice. The Everly song "Crying in the rain" was replaced with "Let it be me" with Albert on piano. During the break there was a raffle - I won nothing as usual.
The 2nd set was even more vibrant. Jim Tait was invited as special guest doing a song with the band. Somebody requested "Jim, Country Boy" which caused a lot of laughter. Instead, he decided to do a stunning version of "Singing the Blues" with the boys, Jim on guitar and vocals. Peter mentioned that this song could also be found on one of Hogan's Heroes CDs but of course not as good as Jim's version! A great evening full of fantastic music and a lot of fun. It was over too soon but the next gig was already on the horizon.


Our good friend Alan Prudhoe from Barnard Castle wrote about the Lancastrian Suite show:
