Albert Lee & Hogan's Heroes, LE PLAN Ris Orangis, France - 28 Sep 2011

Albert Lee & Hogan's Heroes played the venue LE PLAN at Ris Orangis (near Paris), Ile de France, on 28 September 2011. Support was done by the group COTTON BELLY'S. Unfortunately I couldn't make it to this gig. Here's a comment from a local French newspaper.

Dès l’entrée d’Albert Lee sur scène, nous prenons une claque monumentale, tant l’homme qui fêtera prochainement ses 68 printemps nous bluffe d’une élégante prestance à se mouvoir et d’une déconcertante aisance à nous envoyer ses riffs d’une puissante et diabolique limpidité sur les premiers titres, ‘Travellin’prayer’ et ‘Livin’it down’. Quelle dextérité de jeu, ce virtuose de la technique hybrid picking est impressionnant.

Durant deux sets, Albert Lee & the Hogan’s Heroes enflamment la salle du Plan, offrant à un public conquis leur répertoire country survitaminé, pimenté de quelques bons vieux rocks des seventies. Quelques moments forts et émotionnels lorsque Monsieur Lee délaisse sa guitare et se pose corps et âme au piano pour faire fondre et chavirer l’assistance sur quelques titres de l’album ‘Like this’.
Derniers titres en rappel sous les ovations, ‘One night’ puis ‘Tear it up’, avant de terminer la soirée avec les deux groupes présents pour partage avec les artistes et dédicaces d’albums.

Si l’approche de la perfection relatif à la pureté du son avait un nom, peut-être pourrions nous l’associer à celui d’Albert Lee comme en témoigne la signature sur le manche de sa guitare Music Man. Allez savoir…!!

Albert Lee & Hogan's Heroes' letztes Konzert in Deutschland auf ihrer Herbst-Tour.
Ansbacher Kammerspiele ist ein neuer Veranstaltungsort für die Band, aber wie es so oft bei ihnen ist, sie kamen als Fremde und gingen als Freunde. Es handelt sich um ein ehemaliges Kino, in dem heutzutage vielschichtige kulturelle Veranstaltungen stattfinden, man kann die Räume auch für private Veranstaltungen mieten. Zahlreiche Bands aus UK treten dort auf, unter ihnen gute alte Bekannte wie Norman Beaker Band, Chris Farlowe, Andy Fairweather Low & The Low Riders und nun auch unsere Helden.

Der Saal war teilweise bestuhlt, hinten an der Bar gab es reichlich Stehplätze. Eine nette Überraschung wartete auf mich, gute Bekannte aus dem Münchner Rattlesnake Saloon waren dort: Sigrid, Harald sowie Anna mit ihrem Mann. Wir sicherten uns umgehend Plätze in den vorderen Reihen.Von Beginn an stand das Konzert unter einem guten Stern. Die Zuschauer gingen voll mit und gönnten jedem Musiker seinen wohlverdienten Zwischenapplaus nach den tollen Soli.

Natürlich bekamen Songs wie LUXURY LINER, wo Albert an der Gitarre alles gab, mächtigen Applaus. Jedoch zu jedermanns Überraschung - und besonders zu Peters eigener - war sein Lied THE KING OF BROKEN HEARTS der absolute Publikumsliebling im ersten Set.

Mit RAD GUMBO gings dann nach der Pause flott weiter. Wir waren einstimmig der Meinung, dass die Jungs nochmals eine ordentliche Schippe drauflegten. Sie waren in Spiellaune und ließen nichts aus. Das Lied aus Brians Feder YOU KNOW YOU JUST MIGHT war ein Knaller. COUNTRY BOY und die ausgezeichneten Zugaben bewirkten tosenden Applaus, Fußtrampeln und endloses Klatschen - besser kann man die Deutschland-Konzerte kaum abschließen.

Am nächsten Morgen hiess es Servus Ansbach   ....  ein weiter Weg nach Hause und den Blues im Gepäck.

Albert Lee & Hogan's Heroes' last gig in Germany on their autumn tour.
Another venue where they 'came as strangers and left as friends' - as the old saying goes. The place was a former cinema now used for live music and all kinds of cultural events - often frequented by UK Bands such as Norman Beaker Band, Chris Farlowe, Andy Fairweather Low & The Low Riders to name a few.

I was surprised to meet good friends there who are 'Rattlesnake Saloon regulars' like me. The place was partly seated with additional standing room in the back. We were lucky to get some good seats close to the stage, and after having swapped the latest news it was show time! The first set was unbelievable. After Albert's excellent guitar work on LUXURY LINER a storm of ovations broke lose, but the favourite song was definitely THE KING OF BROKEN HEARTS with drummer Peter Baron on vocals, people wouldn't stop cheering and clapping which took everybody - but mainly Pete - by surprise.

The second set started as usual with RAD GUMBO, another crowd pleaser. We all agreed that the band set the bar even higher - if that's possible. The band and crowd were in the mood, each band member got his well-deserved extra cheers. It was difficult to pick a favourite tune, they were all so good. Glad to see that Brian's self-penned song YOU JUST MIGHT was also received with great enthusiasm. After the excellent finale, the audience agreed 'this was an absolute highlight' and a great way to finish the German leg of the tour.

"Albert Lee & Hogan's Heroes - Knaller zum Auftakt. Eine Country-Blues-Legende ist am Samstag in Gaildorf zu hören. Das  Häberlen der Kulturschmiede startet mit Albert Lee ins Herbstprogramm. Am Samstag, 24 September, beginnt bei der Kulturschmiede im Häberlen  die Herbstsaison. Zum Auftakt spielen Albert Lee & Hogans Heroes  Country-Blues und Rock"n" Roll. Lee, der am Sonntag auch einen  Gitarren-Workshop im Häberlen geben  wird, wurde vom Magazin "Guitar Player" fünf Mal zum "Best Country  Guitar Picker" gewählt, war zweimal für den Grammy als bester  Instrumentalist nominiert und gewann 2002 den Grammy in der Kategorie  "Best Country Instrumental Performance".

My brief review:

Albert Lee & Hogan's Heroes played the Kulturschmiede Gaildorf/Germany for the first time and took the audience by storm. The place was a complete sell-out, people stood packed together like sardines in a can. It was very hot in every respect, as some of the photos may reflect. Sweat was running and lots of liquids required - but that's Rock'n Roll.The atmosphere was much better than the day before in Luxembourg, I met many like-minded musicfans, and we all had a ball. As the newspaper article below describes it 'the band turned the venue into a boiling pot'.

Again I noticed that time flies when you're having fun - it was over too soon. The usual queues at the bands' signing table, autographs, photos or just saying HI to the band members. It wasn't quite over as there was an Albert Lee Guitar Clinic on the programme for Sunday afternoon.

Albert Lee Guitar Clinic

Am Sonntagnachmittag gab Albert in der Kulturkneipe Häberlen einen Gitarrenworkshop. Die meisten Teilnehmer hatten wohl eine Art Unterricht erwartet, da im Internet zu lesen war, dass die Teilnahme 'nur für Gitarrespieler' sei. Die Clinic lief jedoch nach Alberts üblichem Schema ab, er spielte einige seiner Instrumentalsongs und erzählte von seinen Anfängen als Musiker und seiner langjährigen Karriere, erklärte sein Equipment und ausführlich seine Ernie Ball Signaturgitarre.
Es wurde - wie immer - ein höchst unterhaltsamer Nachmittag. Ich habe über Alberts Clinics an anderer Stelle schon mehrfach geschrieben, so dass sich eine Wiederholung erübrigt. Er ging nur diesmal etwas mehr auf seine Zusammenarbeit mit anderen Musikern ein, wobei natürlich Namen wie Chris Farlowe, Emmylou, die Everlys, Eric Clapton und die Crickets nebst anderen nicht fehlen durften. Erstmalig erwähnte er auch Sandy Denny und sein kurzes Intermezzo bei ihrer Band Fotheringay, ebenso POET AND THE ONE MAN BAND, aus der dann HEADS HANDS AND FEET entstanden. Es wurden auch Fragen nach Mark Knopfler gestellt, mit dem er (nicht verwunderlich) ebenfalls zusammengearbeitet hat.

Zum Abschluss gab es dann nochmal den COUNTRY BOY exklusiv für die Anwesenden. Dann verteilte Sue kostenlose Poster, und manch einer der Teilnehmer ließ sich seine mitgebrachte Gitarre von Albert signieren. Die Kulturkneipe Häberlen stellte netterweise kostenlos Kaffee, Kaltgetränke und Gebäck bereit. Wer wollte, konnte einen kleinen Obolus für die im Ort laufende Aktion 'Gaildorf hilft Afrika' in die Sammelbüchse stecken.

Kleine Anmerkung: Die Gebühr für die Clinic betrug €50,--, was m. E. recht happig war, meistens bieten Gitarrenshops solche Workshops umsonst an oder für einen geringen Beitrag. // On the downside: Tickets for the guitar clinic cost €50.-- which was way too high (IMO). Usually guitar shops offer these clinics for free or for just a small amount.

Albert Lee Guitar Clinic on Sunday afternoon. I thought many people expected kind of a guitar lesson as the internet advert said 'for guitar players only'. Many people brought their instruments along. Albert held the clinic following his usual pattern, told us how it all began and how he got hold of his first instruments. He played some of his instrumentals, and demonstrated his Ernie Ball Musicman Signature Guitar, explained his amps and gadgets, and it became a most entertaining afternoon. I have written earlier about his clinics and don't want to repeat myself. Just this time he told more about his collaboration with other musicians, of course names like Chris Farlowe, Emmylou, the Everlys, Eric Clapton and the Crickets among others were mentioned. For the first time he mentioned also the late Sandy Denny and his brief intermezzo with her group Fotheringay. POET AND THE ONE MAN BAND - the forerunner of HEADS HANDS AND FEET - got a mention as well. People asked the usual questions, somebody wanted to know whether Albert had worked with Mark Knopfler (he had). Albert concluded the clinics playing his trade mark song COUNTRY BOY exclusively for the participants. Sue handed out free posters, and those who brought guitars had them signed by Albert.The lovely hosts offered free coffees, cakes and soft drinks. You were free to give a small donation for the city's current project 'Gaildorf helps Africa'.

Albert Lee & Hogan's Heroes, L'Inoui Redange, Luxembourg 21 - 23 Sep 2011

Albert Lee and Hogan's Heroes played the Club L'Inoui at Redange, Luxembourg for three nights in a row. The club turned out to be a nice intimate venue, not too big, with a lovely staff and a well-assorted menu and bar. No fast-food but tasty meals, meats, vegetarian and Austrian (!) specialities all prepared by an excellent Chef. However, you needed quite some cash ready as it turned out to be rather expensive, to start with the entrance fee of €35.--. Some wine and a bite and - bang went the money. The lovely hosts had reserved me a table close to the stage for all three nights. The stage was just big enough to hold all the bands' gear, Gerry had not much room left sitting at the left wall, same applies to Gavin being squashed against the right wall. The front row tables were so close that I felt like sitting onstage, and for the band it was difficult to work their way through the packed club.

First gig on 21 September 2011:
The club was almost sold out, just a handful of empty seats. Temperatures high and needless to say that the band were brilliant. No changes in the set list, and a very responsive audience clapping away.

Gig #2 on 22 September 2011:

All sold out, temperatures even higher than the night before. It was a nice surprise to meet Derek Watts, the author of Albert's biography there. I wouldn't have recognized him but he spotted me immediately in the crowd and came over for a brief chat. He brought some Luxembourgian friends along who were Albert & HHs 'newcomers' but got hooked on the spot. I saw them later at Sue's table looking out for CDs and having them signed by the boys.

Gig #3 on 23 September 2011:

Again a sell-out. I met some nice local ladies who had no idea what to expect and who was going to play. We understood each other as they spoke Luxembourgish which is a Moselle Franconian dialect of German so we got along quite well. After enjoying some food and wine together I moved over to my usual seat. Albert and the boys didn't keep the audience waiting and started at full speed. I wasn't sure what to think of the audience this time, there were some rude people with an annoying behaviour to say the very least. A surprise was waiting towards the end: Mike Bell, Hogan's Heroes very first keyboard player was there and Albert asked him onstage to join for the encore. They did a fantastic version of TEAR IT UP, Mike and Gavin as a double act playing two pianos simultaneously! The place rocked, and even Sue joined me at my table to enjoy this rare performance !

Albert Lee & Hogan's Heroes played the Jubez Club in Karlsruhe on 20 Sep 2011. The support was done by our local friends The Rolling Drunks featuring Georg Grimm on bass and Lisa Nicola on keyboards and vocals, special mention to her. Hogan's Heroes started at full speed playing their usual setlist. Needless to say that they were brilliant - first time thundering applause in the first set after Albert's excellent guitar work on LUXURY LINER written by Gram Parsons. Each band member got their well-deserved ovations, and when the encore (ONE NIGHT) was on, Albert asked his old mate Georg Grimm onstage doing an excellent job on bass. They closed the show as usual with TEAR IT UP, causing endless stomping and clapping by the very responsive crowd. I noticed a bunch of professional photographers, press people and a lot of fellow musicians among the audience.

It was great to meet up with Georg, Lisa, Herma, Horst, Thomas and other local friends. We swapped the latest news after show and had fun taking some photos.

Im Wallis / La Valais

Ich lass mich verladen .... am Lötschberg!
Der schnellste Weg ins Wallis führt durch den Tunnel von der Verladestation Kandersteg nach Goppenstein und zurück. Für mich war es das dritte Mal, immer wieder ein Erlebnis.

Mein erster Besuch im Wallis war 2010  in Turtmann bzw. meine Bleibe in Leuk in der Nähe. Ein wunderschönes Hotel mit Terrasse und Blick auf einen Golfplatz, im Hintergrund die Berge.

Mein zweiter Besuch im Wallis, dieses Mal in Siders, das in dem doppelsprachigen Raum der Schweiz auch Sierre (frz.) genannt wird. Freizeit wird dort groß geschrieben, es gibt alle möglichen Angebote, z.B. Golf, Wandern, natürlich in der Saison Skifahren und vieles mehr. Crans Montana ist nicht weit. Der Ausblick auf die Berge, wenn sie nicht wolkenverhangen sind, ist atemberaubend.

Albert Lee & Hogan's Heroes, Buffet de la Gare Sierre - 18 Sep 2011

Last Albert Lee & Hogan's Heroes gig in Switzerland took place 'Chez Ines and Paul Mac Bonvin' who are hosting the Buffet de la Gare at Sierre.

The venue is rather small and was already packed when I arrived. Space on the stage was limited, there was absolutely no place for Albert's piano and people sat very close. Most of Albert's slow piano songs were left out, Gavin sat in doing the main part of the Elvis song BIG HUNKA LOVE, last song before the interval - to huge applause. Thanks to lovely Ines Mac Bonvin for giving me such a warm welcome and making a chair available, I sat almost behind Gavin and had a good view. But I also had the hot spotlights over me and temperatures got extremely high. The band were outstanding. Jean-Christophe the young harmonica player we had met at Courtelary the night before, joined them giving a special addition to COUNTRY BOY which was an interesting change!

Paul the host held a little speech during the break and welcomed people coming from Paris for this gig, I also got a friendly mention which took me by surprise. Later I met a bunch of lovely people from the neighbourhood, we spoke a terrible mixture of languages but as we all shared the same passion for music it became easy to understand each other. Leaving Switzerland next morning and heading towards Karlsruhe in the South West of Germany.

Nun also auf ins Wallis mit dem Autoverladezug hinter Kandersteg und zum letzten Schweizer Gig nach Sierre. Das Lokal gehört dem Ehepaar Ines und Paul MacBonvin und war bereits bis (fast) auf den letzten Platz gefüllt, als ich ankam. Ines sorgte für einen Sitzplatz und kümmerte sich auch sonst ganz reizend um mich. Ich saß fast genau hinter Gavin, was eine gute Sicht garantierte, hatte aber auch gleichzeitig die heißen Scheinwerfer über mir, was nicht zur Abkühlung beitrug. Die Bühne war winzig, es gab keinen Raum für Alberts Piano, so dass die meisten seiner langsamen Piano-Songs ausgelassen wurden. Gavin übernahm bei BIG HUNKA LOVE den Hauptanteil am Piano und wurde mit Beifall nur so überschüttet. Zum Publikum ist zu sagen, dass es begeistert war, nicht mit Zwischenapplaus geizte und die Show in vollen Zügen genoss.

Bei COUNTRY BOY bat Albert den jungen Mundharmonika-Spieler Jean-Christophe auf die Bühne, den wir bereits am Tag zuvor in Courtelary bewundern durften. Der wohlbekannte Song bekam daher eine etwas andere Note, eine interessante Abwechslung. Paul hielt eine kleine Ansprache in der Pause und begrüßte internationale Gäste, die extra wegen des Gigs angereist waren, z.B. einige Fans aus Paris und eine bestimmte Person aus Berlin ;-). In dieser lockeren Atmosphäre fand man schnell gleichgesinnte Musikfans, und trotz des Sprachgewirrs verstanden wir uns ausgezeichnet - die Musik verbindet. Am nächsten Morgen hieß es dann "uf wiederluege Schwiiz"  - weiter gings mit dem Autoverladezug über Kandersteg in Richtung Karlsruhe. Ich habe wegen der grellroten Beleuchtung einige Fotos auf schwarz-weiß gesetzt.

The venue was a big tent with a spacious stage, a dance floor in front of the stage for the many line-dancers, and tables, food stalls, bars and all kind of small shops where they sold Western items as hats, belts, buckles, badges and more.

The band were fantastic, after the great warm-up by Paul Mac Bonvin and his band the audience were in the mood and enjoyed the show to the full. Even here, I spotted familiar faces in the crowd, among them a fellow fan from France. Lots of photos were taken, and I thought this time mine didn't come out too shabby   ;)

It was over too soon, and after the encores the excellent festival organisation team handed out wine bottles to the musicians and posed alltogether for a 'good-bye and thank you' photo onstage.

Sue's table was very much in demand, the boys had to sign tons of items and kindly posed for photos. A great festival, nice people and a lot of fun!

This was the only wet night in Switzerland, it was pouring buckets and I hardly made my way back to the car without getting soaked!

On the bill was also Paul MacBonvin and Band, a great Swiss musician and a good friend of Albert Lee & Hogan's Heroes.
He opened up for Albert & HHs, wore a well-known 'Albert Lee' Poshrat T-Shirt and delivered an excellent performance. Paul was playing various instruments as guitars, accordion, and keyboards. A young musician, Jean-Christophe was guesting on harmonica, he was fantastic, and we would see him again next day at another Swiss gig in Sierre.

As always, it was fantastic catching up with friends and having a great time at the picturesque city of Aarberg. All of us enjoyed the fantastic concert and the great hospitality at this venue, thanks to the lovely Krone staff. The weather was nice, sunshine on a beautiful Indian summer day, and the temperatures in the ballroom got really high, everyone felt like being in a sauna! The spotlights didn't help, it was hot in every respect, and despite getting soaked our heroes delivered an outstanding performance. The setlist remained unchanged, same as in Verviers. Long queues later at the signing table, photos were taken, CDs, DVDs and other stuff signed. Some people just wanted to say Hello, shake hands, or have a quick word with the band members.

Buddy Holly day celebrated in Los Angeles

Buddy Holly would have turned 75 years old yesterday and, in remembrance, the city of Los Angeles declared it Buddy Holly Day.

As part of the day's events, a Hollywood Walk of Fame star unveiling attended by Holly's widow, Maria Elena Holly and her family, Peter Asher, (executive producer of Listen to Me: Buddy Holly), Phil Everly, Gary Busey, Albert Lee, and Ritchie Valens' family were among those in attendance. "I know Buddy is looking down and saying thanks to all of you," Maria Elena said.

Widow, celebs pay tribute to Buddy Holly at Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony It was a warm day, actually very hot in Los Angeles on Wednesday as Maria Elena Holly and celebrity fans Gary Busey, who starred as Holly in "The Buddy Holly Story" movie, Peter Asher of Peter & Gordon and Phil Everly of the Everly Brothers helped dedicate a star for the late singer on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on what would have been his 75th birthday. Busey also played a song during the ceremony. We're told a good-sized crowd turned out for the ceremony at the Capitol Records tower in Hollywood. The tribute continues tonight with an invitation-only tribute Buddy Holly concert. Those performing will include Boz Scaggs, Chris Isaak, Paul Anka, Cobra Starship (which includes Peter Asher's daughter, Victoria), Stevie NIcks, Graham Nash, Michelle Branch, Raul Malo, Lyle Lovett and veteran guitarist James Burton. A tribute CD, one of two released for Holly's birthday, was also released today. "Listen to Me: Buddy Holly" features Ringo Starr, Jeff Lynne, Brian Wilson, Eric Idle, Stevie Nicks, Linda Ronstadt, The Fray, Cobra Starship, Jackson Brown, Chris Isaak, Natalie Merchant and Patrick Monahan from Train. A second tribute CD, released within the last couple of months, called "Rave On: Buddy Holly," features Paul McCartney, Modest Mouse, Lou Reed, Kid Rock, Graham Nash, John Doe, Fiona Apple & Jon Brion, She & Him, Nick Lowe, Patti Smith and the Detroit Cobras.

Rolling Stones' Keith Richards 'helps radio station'

An Isle of Wight radio station has claimed a donation from Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards helped get it back on air.

Angel Radio broadcast a plea for help to pay for a £2,000 transmitter for its Newport operation after it was damaged in a storm in July.

Station director Bev Webster said after the broadcast a cheque for £3,000 arrived from the Sussex musician.

The island station relies heavily on listener donations.
The plea for help was also broadcast on Angel's commercial sister station, based in Havant.
Mr Richards has a house in the Witterings area of West Sussex, in the station's broadcast area, but it is not known whether the 67-year-old had been listening to the broadcast.

The cheque, which the station said was sent from Mr Richards' accountant in London, arrived along with scores of other donations from listeners.

Ms Webster said: "I opened the envelope and nearly had a heart attack. It said it was a donation from Keith Richards.

"We looked at one another and said, 'could it be the Keith Richards? Is there any other Keith Richards?'."
Ms Webster said she wrote a letter of thanks after confirming with the accountant that the cheque was from the Rolling Stones guitarist.

Station manager Tony Smith said the extra money would pay for radio licences.
He said: "It's always a struggle. My Havant station can take advertising but the Isle of Wight isn't allowed to because of Ofcom rules so they rely on donations."

Angel Radio, which plays nostalgic music from 1900 to 1959, began broadcasting as a pirate station in 1993.

"Eine alte Feldsteinkirche aus dem Mittelalter (grob geschätzt v. 1300). Die alten Fenster waren im Spitzbogenstil gebaut. Im Laufe der Jahrhunderte wurde einiges an der Kirche geändert, z. B. wurden vor längerer Zeit größere Fenster und Türen eingebaut. Die alten Fenster- und Türöffnungen sind z.T. deutlich erkennen."
