The Blues World Has Lost A Legend ... David "Honeyboy" Edwards

News & Updates from Memphis in May

The Blues Music world has lost a legend.
Grammy-winning Blues musician David "Honeyboy" Edwards, believed to be the oldest surviving Delta bluesman died early Monday in his Chicago home. He was 96. "Honeyboy" played the Beale Street Music Festival several times over the years and his last performance at the festival was in 2007. Born in 1915 in Shaw, Miss., Edwards learned the guitar growing up and started playing professionally at age 17 in Memphis, Tenn. He came to Chicago in the 1940s and played on Maxwell Street, small clubs and street corners. By the 1950s, Edwards had played with almost every bluesman of note. Among Edwards' hit songs were "Long Tall Woman Blues," "Gamblin' Man" and "Just Like Jesse James."

Edwards won a 2008 Grammy for traditional blues album and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement award in 2010. Edwards was known for being an oral historian of the music genre and would tell biographical stories between songs at his shows, Frank said. He was recorded for the Library of Congress in Clarksdale, Miss., in 1942.

27 August 2011, Schloss Diedersdorf near Berlin. Free entry for girls with petticoats. Could have been a great event and much fun but unfortunately it rained all day.

Eine Oldtimer und US Classic Car-Show.

John Jorgenson & Albert Lee - US Tour 2011 - East Coast

Last show in Londonderry, NH (USA)

"Duelling Guitars In Londonderry"

Posted by Jack Suslak on Facebook, Thursday, 25 August 2011 at 06:45

24 August 2011, Londonderry, N.H.,Tupelo Music Hall

Veteran guitarists John Jorgenson and UK's Albert Lee (now of Calif.) tore down the intimate venue tonight, with a stunning, electric performance.

For nearly 2 hours, the guitarists ripped through rockabilly, blues, Everly Brothers, Elvis and Buddy Holly Standards.

The audience was mesmerized and enthusiastic on this, their final show of their East Coast tour. The sold-out crowd leaped to their feet in appreciation on more than 8 standing ovations.

Guitarist Jorgenson brought down the entire house with a track from the Beatles "Revolver". On "Love You Too", Jorgenson proved what a master of the guitar he is with a breathtaking and soaring extended instrumental. The crowd loved it.

Another exceptional performance featured Albert Lee (piano) and Jorgenson (Acoustic Guitar) re-working of Rodney Crowell's lovely ballad, "Til I Gain Control Again".
The concert was a 9 out of 10 for sure.

Note must be made of the solid 3 piece backing band and violinist. The drummer was tremendous, and kept a thundering solid beat all evening long.

Highlights:
Elvis Presely's "Big Hunk Of Love"
The Everly Brothers "Devoted To You"
Buddy Holly's "Well Alright"
and Leonard Cohen's "If It Be Your Will"

About Carolyn Wonderland
A musical force equipped with the soulful vocals of Janis and the guitar slinging skills of Stevie Ray, Carolyn Wonderland reaches into the depths of the Texas blues tradition with the wit of a poet. She hits the stage with unmatched presence, a true legend in her time.

"She'd grown up the child of a singer in a band and began playing her mother's vintage Martin guitar when other girls were dressing dolls. She'd gone from being the teenage toast of her hometown Houston to sleeping in her van in Austin amid heaps of critical acclaim for fine recordings Alcohol & Salvation, Bloodless Revolution, and most recently, Miss Understood.

Along with the guitar and the multitude of other instruments she learned to play – trumpet, accordion, piano, mandolin, lap steel – Wonderland's ability to whistle remains most unusual. Whistling is a uniquely vocal art seldom invoked

MEN IN BLACK - a fantastic Johnny Cash Tribute Band on the German-American Volksfest. They played not only good old Johnny Cash Standards, but also Hank Williams tunes and many more, their version of JAMBALAYA was a killer and caused people to get up and dance. Their Aussie Rhythm Guitarist surprised us even by yodelling.
