Seit ihrem ersten Auftritt 1967 haben sich PROCOL
HARUM stetig weiterentwickelt, aber Kopf der Band war immer
Gründungsmitglied, Sänger, Pianist und Komponist Gary Brooker. Ein
großer Teil der aktuellen Besetzung spielt schon seit Anfang der 90er
zusammen. Dazu gehören der Bassist Matt Pegg (Jethro Tull, Ian Brown),
Drummer Geoff Dunn (Jimmy Page, Dave Stewart, Van Morrison), Gitarrist
Geoff Whitehorn (Roger Chapman, Paul Rodgers, Roger Daltrey) und
Hammondorgelspieler Josh Phillips (Pete Townsend, Midge Ure). Für ihre
Fans sind sie die echten PROCOL HARUM.
Gary Brooker: “Unser letztes Studioalbum kam 2003
heraus und da 2017 das 50-jährige Bandjubiläum von PROCOL HARUM
bevorstand, wollten wir etwas Besonderes Machen. Das Ergebnis ist ein
neues Album mit neuen Songs, aufgenommen mit derselben Besetzung, wie
sie schon seit zehn Jahren besteht und mit Dennis Weinreich im
Produzentensessel. Ich finde “Novum” ist eines unserer besten Alben
überhaupt. Hört es Euch einfach an.”
“Novum” bringt auch eine neue Entwicklung für PROCOL
HARUM: Am Songwriting war diesmal die ganze Band beteiligt. Die Texte
stammen hauptsächlich von Pete Brown, der vor allem für seine
Songwriting-Kollaboration mit den Mitgliedern der Band Cream bekannt
ist. Das gab den Songs eine neue Stimmung. Sie haben weiterhin die
inhaltliche Tiefe, für die die Band bekannt ist, aber mit einem anderen
Beigeschmack und witzigen Elementen.
“Novum” markiert nicht nur 50 unglaubliche Jahre mit
großartiger Musik, sondern ist auch der nächste Schritt für diese
einflussreiche Band. Die Musik und Virtuosität der Musiker ist wie immer
von allerhöchster Qualität und diese langersehnte Sammlung brandneuer
Songs wird bei den Fans von PROCOL HARUM sicherlich großartig ankommen.
My brief comment:
Procol Harum were brilliant at the packed Admiralspalast Berlin last night. As the venue is funny with cameras I brought only a small 'pocket' which meant rubbish photos (last night bigger cameras were allowed, bad luck for me), also the poor seat in the back and the lighting didn't help. The gig made up for everything, Gary was in good spirits and talkative much to everybody's enjoyment (mentioning his collaboration with Bill Wyman's RKs and Geogie Fame). His voice was full and strong, standing ovations already during the show and of course at the end. Happy faces all around. I was able to have a brief word with Geoff Whitehorn at their bus. I told Geoff that I had seen him with Roger Chapman earlier and he kindly let me know that they would all be back before too long - probably in early 2018. Joern and I also waved Gary bye-bye and said him a brief THANK YOU before he was taken away by a taxi. Unfortunately professional autograph hunters had bothered him with stacks of stuff to sign until he had enough so no chance for us to ask him for a photo.
All in all, a fantastic gig and big thanks go to the soundman who let me copy the setlist.
