Having already bought a ticket to see The Rhythm Kings at the Brighton Dome, I could not believe my eyes when I read on The Guestbook that Dennis would be "sittin' in". 

It was indeed a brief appearance but hearing Albert Lee say "How can I follow that?" after Dennis sang Louisiana 1927 was a particularly special moment.

Dennis: I didn't know Albert had said that.Very kind, but the man has no problem following anyone.He's a KILLER!

Carolina: It was great to see you, Dennis.

Below please find a review from Salisbury Journal (slightly shortened) which says it all, so I haven't written a comment of my own which would only be repetitive. It was nice to meet up with Claire again, funnily we had adjactant seats by accident as the night before at Colston Hall Bristol which caused quite some laughter.

And he brought with him as special guest all the way from America – Mary Wilson of The Supremes fame.

On stage with Bill were eight musicians and six vocalists with exceptional musical pedigrees and the band provided an eclectic mix of musical styles ranging from rhythm and blues, soul, rockabilly, blues, jazz, country, rock and jump. Added to this was Motown, courtesy of Mary Wilson.

There were many high points during the show beginning with Georgie Fame on his Hammond organ belting out I’ve Got a Woman. Two great duets from Mary Wilson and Georgie Fame with Stormy Weather and Beverley Skeete and Albert Lee with the Everly Brothers song, So Sad. Coupling this with the high energy radiating from the stage when the band played as a unit made for a fabulous evening.

Songs such as Three Cool Cats, the Coasters classic featuring a memorable Frank Mead sax solo and Albert Lee singing Lonnie Donegan’s Mule Skinner Blues. A soulful Beverley Skeete singing the James Brown classic It’s a Man’s World silenced the audience and band.

Mary Wilson’s contribution was immense, reintroducing a medley of Supremes favourites from Baby Love to You Can’t Hurry Love as well as a beautiful version of the Nora Jones song, Don’t Know Why.

Bill Wyman did what he always did as a member of the Rolling Stones, standing at the back of the stage and laying down the bass rhythm while letting all the showbusiness go on in front of him.

The second episode will debut on '50s on 5, channel 5, on Monday, November 21 at 12:00 pm ET.

Brief review:

My Birthday gig, great as usual and no changes to the setlist. The band were brilliant and Mary Wilson got lots of extra cheers not only because of her stunning outfits! Standing ovations, and everybody jumped to their feet when the last song DANCING IN THE STREET was on.

When I was just about to leave the showroom all of a sudden the fire doors closed right behind me, fire alarm! We were told to leave the building immediately. I noticed smoke and the smell of burnt rubber but fortunately nothing happened. Rumour had it that it was arson in the older part of the building. Also the Rhythm Kings had to leave and made a quick exit to their bus. Lots of fans waiting there, I met some guys from the Liverpool area whom I'd seen on other gigs. Also the owner of the Thunderbolt Club in Bristol where Albert & HHs played this spring was in the crowd. After some brief chats with band members and music buddies I made my way back to my hotel.

Warnham, despite the proximity of the Horsham bypass, still has in part at least the air of an  estate village.

The Anglican Parish Church, dedicated to St. Margaret was built in the 14th Century, but contains substantial later additions. The poet Percy Shelley, born two miles from Warnham at Field Place, a broad-fronted country house set on an estate/working farm, was baptised there in 1792. In addition it houses monuments belonging to a number of influential Sussex families, among them the Carylls, the Lucases and the Shelleys.

Big Boy Bloater & The Limits Big Boy Bloater & The Limits supported Imelda May in Brighton, Dome, on 14 November 2011. Mark Morgan (Mike Sanchez' drummer) sat in, nice to see him again. First time I saw Big Boy Bloater with his new band, had only seen him earlier this spring in Switzerland being a member of Mike Sanchez' band.

Big Boy Bloater said about the show: "Awesome so far at Brighton - what a great crowd! Just met tons of lovely people in the interval, hopefully some more at the end!"

Imelda May put on a live show so slickly crafted the audience were treated to a powerhouse of her amazing vocal talent. As soon as she took to the stage, silhouetted in front of her giant backdrop, her distinctive look of coiffed ponytail and 1950s wiggle dress set the scene for a retro extravaganza. Stealing the very best from a musical past that scans rockabilly, country and rock ’n’ roll, she powered through the two-hour set, pausing only to chat amiably with the crowd. “I’m delighted with myself,” she lilted in her native Dublin accent. She is finally where she wants to be – headlining in major venues – and she evidently loves it.

It’s not surprising, though, that she’s got to where she is now. With raw ingredients that include a gob-smacking range, an ability to swing from vulnerable to vixen, pure to predatory and just about everything in between, her performance was theatrical, entertaining and great fun. Backed by her trusty band, led by guitarist Darrel Higham, every song was orchestrated with moments of their individual genius.

Dave Prisemans’ crispy brass on Big Bad Handsome Man, Al Gares’ thumping double bass on Johnny Got A Boom Boom and the drum solos were to die for. But always the true star was Imelda May, whether it was the ultra spine-tingling moments crooning Knock 123 or rockin’ out with Tainted Love.

While the predominantly seated audience were appreciative in their own way, it’s possible the cost of popularity will remain the sacrifice of the raw energy and enthusiasm of her earliest fans.

  A WISE man once said that after Armageddon the only survivors would be the cockroaches and Keith Richards.

Maybe he got the wrong Stone, because Bill Wyman, at75, shows little sign of decline. His Rhythm Kings, with the likes of Georgie Fame, former Everlys sidekick Albert Lee and ex-Supreme Mary Wilson, simply keep on rocking.

This was a glorious journey though nearly 100 years of great music, from 1920s jazz through to Chuck Berry, Gene Vincent, Motown, the Coasters, Howlin’ Wolf and others.

Bassman Wyman, who quit the Stones nearly 20 years ago, was as impassive as ever, while Rhythm Queen Beverley Skeete and saxmen Frank Mead and Nick Payn boast 64-carat gold stage presence.

The Creedence classic Green River and the Stones’ Honky Tonk Women got the five-star rhythm treatment while Dancing In The Street sent everybody home with a broad grin.

Last week saw the return of rock and roll icon Bill Wyman to Birmingham’s Town Hall. The former Rolling Stones bassist was joined by his band The Rhythm Kings, an eclectic set of musicians including legendary singer/keyboardist Georgie Fame and renowned guitarist Albert Lee. At first, Wyman introduced each of his band in turn, but as the evening went on he seemed content to sit back from the limelight, his solid bass-playing a foundation stone for the performances of the musicians around him.

The set list was a diverse one, featuring a roasting selection of songs from throughout the 50s and 60s; rock and roll, rhythm and blues, a tribute to ‘Skiffle King’ Lonnie Donegan, even a taste of traditional 1920s jazz, featuring the two sax players in constant mischievous cahoots. Just when it seemed the stage couldn’t hold any more musicians, special guest Mary Wilson, original member of The Supremes, appeared for a storming performance of Stop! In the Name of Love, a natural crowd-pleaser, followed by a beautiful duet of Stormy Weather with Georgie Fame.

The audience was plunged into the second half with a gorgeously rich rendition of Man’s World from vocalist Beverley Skeet, perfectly accompanied with precision guitar picking, sensitive piano and epically complex drum fills. Another highlight was a slow and soulful performance of Don’t Know Why, most famously covered by Norah Jones in 2002, followed by a contrasting return to a 1970s Motown sound.

It was unusual to watch these famous, feel-good, essentially dance-oriented tunes whilst sitting in a concert hall. Indeed, the majority of the audience was of the age to remember these songs being in the charts, but Mary Wilson’s return for a finale of Dancing in the Street coaxed everyone to their feet, making the middle aged couple dancing on the top circle less of a bizarre sight.

Bill Wyman and his Rhythm Kings can certainly be admired for performing such a variety of iconic music for, in his words, ‘just a bit of fun,’ something that outlines Wyman’s dedicated love of playing. Though some songs are starting to show their age and perhaps don’t have the edge over some modern interpretations, there are still those tunes that remain immortal: even if you have to head to 70s nightclub Flares to hear them, somehow everyone in our generation can sing every word.
