Albert Lee & Hogan's Heroes, Buffet de la Gare Sierre - 18 Sep 2011

Last Albert Lee & Hogan's Heroes gig in Switzerland took place 'Chez Ines and Paul Mac Bonvin' who are hosting the Buffet de la Gare at Sierre.

The venue is rather small and was already packed when I arrived. Space on the stage was limited, there was absolutely no place for Albert's piano and people sat very close. Most of Albert's slow piano songs were left out, Gavin sat in doing the main part of the Elvis song BIG HUNKA LOVE, last song before the interval - to huge applause. Thanks to lovely Ines Mac Bonvin for giving me such a warm welcome and making a chair available, I sat almost behind Gavin and had a good view. But I also had the hot spotlights over me and temperatures got extremely high. The band were outstanding. Jean-Christophe the young harmonica player we had met at Courtelary the night before, joined them giving a special addition to COUNTRY BOY which was an interesting change!

Paul the host held a little speech during the break and welcomed people coming from Paris for this gig, I also got a friendly mention which took me by surprise. Later I met a bunch of lovely people from the neighbourhood, we spoke a terrible mixture of languages but as we all shared the same passion for music it became easy to understand each other. Leaving Switzerland next morning and heading towards Karlsruhe in the South West of Germany.

Nun also auf ins Wallis mit dem Autoverladezug hinter Kandersteg und zum letzten Schweizer Gig nach Sierre. Das Lokal gehört dem Ehepaar Ines und Paul MacBonvin und war bereits bis (fast) auf den letzten Platz gefüllt, als ich ankam. Ines sorgte für einen Sitzplatz und kümmerte sich auch sonst ganz reizend um mich. Ich saß fast genau hinter Gavin, was eine gute Sicht garantierte, hatte aber auch gleichzeitig die heißen Scheinwerfer über mir, was nicht zur Abkühlung beitrug. Die Bühne war winzig, es gab keinen Raum für Alberts Piano, so dass die meisten seiner langsamen Piano-Songs ausgelassen wurden. Gavin übernahm bei BIG HUNKA LOVE den Hauptanteil am Piano und wurde mit Beifall nur so überschüttet. Zum Publikum ist zu sagen, dass es begeistert war, nicht mit Zwischenapplaus geizte und die Show in vollen Zügen genoss.

Bei COUNTRY BOY bat Albert den jungen Mundharmonika-Spieler Jean-Christophe auf die Bühne, den wir bereits am Tag zuvor in Courtelary bewundern durften. Der wohlbekannte Song bekam daher eine etwas andere Note, eine interessante Abwechslung. Paul hielt eine kleine Ansprache in der Pause und begrüßte internationale Gäste, die extra wegen des Gigs angereist waren, z.B. einige Fans aus Paris und eine bestimmte Person aus Berlin ;-). In dieser lockeren Atmosphäre fand man schnell gleichgesinnte Musikfans, und trotz des Sprachgewirrs verstanden wir uns ausgezeichnet - die Musik verbindet. Am nächsten Morgen hieß es dann "uf wiederluege Schwiiz"  - weiter gings mit dem Autoverladezug über Kandersteg in Richtung Karlsruhe. Ich habe wegen der grellroten Beleuchtung einige Fotos auf schwarz-weiß gesetzt.

Hi Gudrun, I think not only are your photos great, but the comments are really informative and interesting. Combined with your photos - the only thing missing is the live band themselves!!
