Rhythm legend Bill Wyman back for music fun - first of 3 summer gigs.
Holmfirth 10th July 2008
A long way ahead, driving the night away to the Channel, ferry crossing and heading for Holmfirth on narrow country roads. The gig took place at the Picturedrome (I was there before at their gig two years back), easily to locate as it was next to my hotel. Unfortunately bad weather with heavy rain made the journey difficult. Getting ready on time to secure a good place, I found two like-minded guys, who were basically Andy Fairweather Low fans and a bit disappointed that Andy wasn't with the band this time due to his solo tour. Dennis Locorriere wasn't with them, either, doing his own solo tour.
We killed time chatting, sipping a couple of stiff drinks until it was time for the Rhythm Kings to take to the stage. Great performance, everyone in good shape. Bill joked in his usual dry way, as did Geraint. Beverley looked stunning in her black dress and high-heels and waved over to me. All of a sudden Bill dropped a bombshell - they did HONKY TONK WOMEN, sung by Bill which was received with great enthusiasm and made everybody dance like mad. To quote Bill: "we never do any Stones songs, but today we do just one." He said he realized that the song had only 2 verses, otherwise he wouldn't do it ....
Later a nice reunion with the band members and Sue who was there as well. I thanked Bill for doing HONKY TONK (they should keep it in their set list from now on) and when it was time to leave I saw them to their bus and waved bye-bye - here's to the next gig in Bilston the following night.
